The Object… assembled, disassembled and reassembled
Two new artists exhibiting at Charlene's Gallery Ten

by Steve Kastner

GILLS ROCK, WI - When painting a still life, Mark Haberle's motive is not to reproduce an exact likeness of anything. Instead he seeks to establish a surreal connection between objects that don't normally relate. He will often spend unusual amounts of time selecting and arranging those specific objects, relating them to an appropriate background and then adjusts the degree and the angle of the lighting - like a theatrical set designer. Mark thinks of his work as a 3-D composition first, followed by a 2-D rendering of that vision.

"The last few minutes of my painting are the last few minutes of an object's life," Mark explains. "After that, the object dies and a painting is born."

Objects like actors, may find their way into another painting, but they play a different role. For Mark, still life painting is about creating deep relationships with things that would normally be considered inanimate. By observing their every exterior and interior detail he begins a conversation with them; and when that dialogue succeeds a play is born on the canvas.

According to Mark, "The surface where the objects are placed becomes a kind of stage, with the objects having something specific to say. It's my responsibility to hear and paint their message."
Mark cultivates a capacity to forget…
He makes a conscious effort to see without preconception, "Each time I paint, I must remove all labels and names of things in order to see their true color and form. It would be much easier to paint an apple if I didn't know it was an apple."

A native of Wisconsin, still-life artist Mark Haberle attended the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in the field of drawing and painting. He has also studied extensively with Lorin Willey of Wisconsin, and figure painter Ann Gale.

When artist
Julie Feider-Grisar looks back into the past she realizes that art has always been one of the most important aspects of her life.

"For as long as I can remember, I have believed in art as a source of strength. I find that it nourishes and sustains me, and provides a constant source of energy, excitement, and challenge.

As a artist working in mosaic, Julie Feider-Grisar is continually immersed in the process of design and construction, bringing parts back into a whole.

"It serves as a metaphor for life itself," she explains.

Julie pieces together dissimilar objects, making use of that which others often see as unusable. Her mosaics become a palate of color, pattern, shape, and texture using tile, plates and glass to express an unlimited collection of ideas and inspiration.

"I find that through mosaics, my ideas find their own soul, and later as works of art they speak to others about what I am thinking and feeling when I am creating them."

Julie Feider-Grisar spent many years as an art therapist, treating individuals and families. Now she teaches and creates.

"My ultimate goal is to become a full time artist, but presently, as an art teacher I feel I can work to help young souls find art as a strength, guide, and a bringer of excitement to their lives!"

You can enjoy an exhibit of both artists' work at Charlene's Gallery Ten in Gills Rock from August 21 through September 24. Enjoy wine and cheese and meet Mark Haberle and Julie Feider-Grisar in person at a reception on Saturday, August 21 from 5 - 7 PM.
