GILLS ROCK, WI - In
"Two takes on the mind of an artist…" Charlene Berg presents Gallery Ten
visitors with an opportunity to experience the works of Melissa Metzler and Holly Peters, two women intent on speaking
via visual art.
"I often communicate with family and friends by voicemail and email," says watercolor artist Melissa Metzler. "It feels
difficult to connect in this electronic space… intimacy and warmth are often lost." Metzler says her watercolors
all share an essential element, "They are visual explorations of transitional states. I want to express vast,
mysterious spaces filled with new beginnings, sparks of life force, and persistence of purpose."

We're Altering Our Essence by Melissa Metzler |
A recent series of Metzler's triptych paintings were derived from her readings
and explorations on genetic engineering while on residency at Anderson Center in Red Wing, Minnesota.
"They are meant to pose an important question," she
explains. "Just how far should we go?" |
Techno-traditional paper artist, Holly Peters, "think(s) colors, shapes and stories really do feed the soul." Her
technique blends the traditional folk-art of Japanese cut paper with vector-based computer graphics.
"I often use a completed paper-cut as the basis for further exploration using digital media," Holly explains.
"This combination of traditional and digital media allows me to retain the tactile aspect of more traditional
materials and processes, and yet allows for a latitude of experimentation… without loss of the original."
She learned kirigami -literally "cutting paper" - while studying printmaking in Japan. It is a reductive
art form, very similar to carving a woodblock for printmaking. She begins with kirigami, hoping to make each work
expressive, to have motion and a storyline. She explains the process that resulted in the eventual creation of
"Pigs Can Fly."
| "I began with a cartoon of two figures looking up and holding a
goose… Well, what were they looking at? Other geese, heading north or south? From this question came the expression
of possibility. Yup, those little piggies can fly." |
