GILLS ROCK, WI - Charlene
Berg brings two distinctive artists to center stage at Gallery Ten in Gills Rock for the opening of an exhibition
featuring Lynn Anderson and Dagmar Kau on Saturday, August 20. Both artists are self-taught and both are versatile in two and three-dimensional
media.
Dagmar Kau is
quick to confess, "In my twenties I started to express myself with oil paints, but when I finally discovered
clay, it was instant love."

In 1970 she began spinning clay in the traditional potter's method but
soon discovered her creative energy was much more suited to freeform building, pinching, coiling and slab-building
the clay in her pieces.
"I love visual and organic texture in my work so I am constantly searching for new ways to achieve this look,"
she explains.
| "As I move away from strictly functional to more sculptural forms,
I use glazes sparingly, if at all, relying for some of my effects on the unique and sometimes accidental effects
of pit and Raku firings." |

In 1990 she began to explore watercolor. Her paintings in pastel, acrylic and watercolor along with her organic
clay sculpture will all be on display at Charlene's through the 23rd of September.
Lynn Anderson
is a multimedia artist, strongly influenced by photography, sculpture and the politics of art. She started "Bustin'
Out" about 3 years ago to get back into sculpting.

"I chose the busts as a way to explore my thoughts about women's
culture - beauty, politics, self image," says Anderson. "The original was a simple yellow hue bust with
a poem that was printed on a transparency."
Looking through the transparency to read the poem engaged the viewer in a trap… staring at the bust inadvertently
or intentionally while reading the first lines of the poem: "Are you staring at my bust or are you looking
at my breast?"
Anderson probes how women feel when people stare, using the female breast as a vehicle to propel further thought.
The busts are made of plaster and shards of ragged t-shirts along with various processes and materials to make
her artistic statements. Some of the found objects include paint, rusty metal, boxing gloves, glass, old steamer
locks and more. Charlene will exhibit a number of Lynn's busts including:

"The White Party" - a set of three busts exploring our needs
to be alike and be different in relationship to each other.
"Roadwork" - an orange bust with a roadwork light exploring women's issues about plastic surgery.
"The Market Women" - a bust that relates to a story about African women protecting each other.
Charlene invites you to meet both women in person, see and discuss their work, enjoy wine and cheese and try not
to stare at Lynn's bust at an Artist's Reception on Saturday,
August 20, from 5 - 7 PM at Gallery Ten in Gills Rock.
