Wear it as jewelry or admire it as sculpture…
Skye and Peter Ciesla's latest works inspired by the Orient
|
ELLISON BAY, WI
- Inspired by the Oriental artifacts and exotica featured at
Linden Galleries, artists Skye and Peter Ciesla have designed a new collection of sculptural jewelry. You can see their latest
works and meet them in person in a two-day show at the Linden Gallery in Ellison Bay on Saturday
and Sunday, May 27 and 28.
| Skye and Peter's one-of-a-kind creations are astounding, integrating jewels,
beads and stones of the Orient in uniquely organic necklaces, cuffs and neckpieces. |
|
"The works we plan to exhibit at Linden Gallery are a bit different from anything else we have ever done,"
says Peter. "We have one piece that incorporates old Pakistani beads and Skye is working on two cuffs that
feature tiny Indian bells."
Peter Ciesla is a fiber artist/designer who immigrated to the United States from Vroclaw, Poland in 1991. He came
with a background in art and costume design. In 1993, he started his own couture custom clothing studio on the
North Shore of Chicago. For 10 years Peter worked with a small group of customers, while at the same time traveling
the country with his one-of-a-kind coat designs, showing them in galleries, museums, trade and fashion shows. In
1997, he won the nationally recognized Niche Award for Surface Design, for his "Butterfly" coat.
In 1998, he began creating some jewelry (necklaces) for one of his customers. He also created his first two sculptural
neckpieces that year. The success of the jewelry was so dramatic it eventually prompted a change of focus. In 2002,
he moved from the Chicago area to Wisconsin, and began concentrating on his unique style of beaded necklaces, sculptural
neckwear and jewelry accessories.
Skye began as a mixed-media sculptor who had an extensive career as a stone sculptor, executing well over 100 works
from 1989-1999. She loved the medium but became frustrated with its limitations. In 1997 she began experimenting
with fiber, culminating in a body of work, the "Raw Linen Series," combining fiber, wood and bead embroidery.
Skye joined with Peter in a collaborative effort that began in 2002. She has developed her unique bead embroidery
style, doing cuffs, brooches and neckpieces in collaboration with Peter for their Bazyli Studio, a private workspace
in Baileys Harbor.
 |
"I design and make the shapes out of felted wool with a network of
wires built into it to retain the shape," Peter explains. "Skye is responsible for the bead embroidery,
colors and stitching." |
Their work is featured in boutiques from coast to coast and has garnered numerous national awards and critical
praise. Turquoise, amber, lapis lazuli, pearl, coral, shell, metal, glass, quartz - it may be worn as jewelry or
displayed as sculpture. You are invited to meet Skye and Peter at Linden Gallery in Ellison Bay on Saturday and
Sunday, May 27 and 28 from 2 - 5 PM.
