Paper Collage Symphony at Linden Gallery
Andrew Lidgus displays the sound of ten thousand cuts
July 15, 2006
by Steve Kastner

ELLISON BAY, WI - Andrew Lidgus calls himself a storyteller… but like many brilliant individuals he is most notably humble, and quite obviously gifted. Lidgus is both a visual studio artist, working in both two and three-dimensional media and a performing artist, recognized as an accomplished pianist, the lead player at Nordstrom's and director of his own music school.

He sees both forms of expression as cohesively intertwined and will tell you that he began his studies of music and art together in the 2nd grade when he began to learn to play the piano. He eventually earned a degree in Fine Arts from Loyola University and a degree in Piano Performance from Sherwood Conservatory, focusing on classical repertoire, but currently hooked on Gershwin.

Linden Gallery in Ellison Bay will be featuring an exclusive exhibit of his exquisite paper collages, some of which have taken hundreds of hours to complete. Lidgus begins each of the works with a blank sheet of paper from which he begins to cut various shapes with a scissors. At times he will struggle to derive forms that are acceptable, laying them out in a delicate assembly of individually cut pieces. Somewhere along the way the works develop a sustaining momentum that has at times grown as much as 20 layers thick and taken a year to complete.

When Lidgus senses that a work is finished he will take it apart and reassemble the entire creation, permanently affixing hundreds of elements into a completed work.

"It may change again and again," says Lidgus. "But in a lot of ways it's no different than a painting. The process is different, but in the end it tells a story."

Lidgus says the upcoming show at Linden Gallery will be all about flight. "I use birds a lot in my work. In some cultures they are considered greater than man because they are not bound by earth. Some cultures consider them the messengers of the Gods, symbols of peace and tranquility."

On
Saturday, July 22 you may talk with Andrew Lidgus in person at the opening of his show from 2 - 5 PM. This will be the second year he is featured in an exclusive showing at the Linden Gallery in Ellison Bay, with his works on display through August 11.

Linden Gallery is located at the corner of Hwy 42 and Mink River Road in downtown Ellison Bay. For more information call 920.854.2487 or visit www.LindensGallery.com on-line.
