GILLS ROCK, WI - Artistic
expression in fiber collage and stitchery will be the focus of the final show at Charlene's Gallery Ten, on display
from September 23 through October 27. Molly Groshek and Una Ryan are the featured artists in "Soulful Evolution,"
a collection of spiritual narratives assembled from a multitude of diverse source materials.
Una Ryan's current body of work is created with materials salvaged from vintage kimonos and obis. The fabric is
attached to painted stretched canvas and embellished with line "drawings" stitched in silk embroidery
threads, glass beads, and carved bone buttons.
"The work allows me the privilege of recycling exquisitely beautiful materials in addition to connecting me
with generations of needle workers in my own family," says Ryan. "Fragile fragments of images of the
natural world symbolize concerns about our environment - both our exterior and interior dwelling spaces."
Michalene (Molly) Groshek takes a different path to the creation of her free-hanging iconic assemblages. She calls
them, "a kind of visual diary," complete with their own symbolic language. "Collectively they represent
my awareness of the sacredness of my life's struggles and joys," she reveals. "I passionately believe
in the power of art to give balance to the challenges of daily life."
Through the use of iconic symbols, emotional colors and a layering of techniques on cloth - dyeing, screen printing,
discharge, appliqué, stitchery and beading - she attempts to record a dynamic and powerful human process
intended to serve as a healing medium for herself and the viewer.
Groshek's works at Gallery Ten will also include a series of "Hand Portraits," honoring the creative
work of special women in her life that have given service unselfishly to others.
You are invited to meet these two artists in person on Saturday,
September 23 from 5 - 7 PM. See their work, enjoy wine, cheese
and stimulating conversation at Gallery Ten in Gills Rock.
While the show will mark the final in this season's series of featured artist exhibits, Gallery Ten will not rest
for the winter months. The Door County Art League will once again make Charlene's their "hang out" beginning
in late November, featuring an ongoing series of ever-changing exhibits and events dedicated to celebrating the
talents of a multitude of local artists.
Charlene's Gallery Ten represents over 100 artists in
a gallery collection that is contemporary, original and eclectic. GT Coffee, complements the gallery, serving espresso
