ABOUT BROOMBALL:
These are four of the most popular theories on how
broomball got started:
- Street car drivers began the game playing at hitting a small
ball about the ice in winter with straw brooms during their lunch breaks.
- Some soccer players started the game after watching a small
boy swatting a ball with a toy broom.
- Non-skaters started broomball as a means to participate
in the rough and tumble world of ice hockey.
- Broomball was started by women, shut out of the male dominated
and controlled sport of ice hockey.
Early broomball equipment consisted of corn brooms, rubber boots, and a soccer ball. The first recorded game is
rumored to have been played in Saskatchewan, Canada in 1909.
