17th Annual Jacksonport Polar Bear Swim

JACKSONPORT, WI - Participants
in this year's event seem to echo an undeclared beach party theme, but the sandy shoreline is less than hospitable. |
In spite of the recent spell of warmer temperatures Lake Michigan has managed
to spawn a 30' shelf of crusty, untrustworthy ice and frozen slush.

| Lifeguards have cut a few pathways to the water in order to provide a safer
route. |
 |
But, the slow going will no doubt impose more time to think about the
impending plunge, making it far more psychologically challenging,
| "Three minutes..." Joe Jarosh announces. |
 |
And they're off... with no mob mania and no mass stampede to the water this
year.

Instead, you must wait patiently and reflect on the faces of those people ahead of you returning from the water
| ...frequently with ice in their hair. |
 |
Some folks can't stand the wait and decide to go over and through the
ice shelf.
 |
"Mommy are you sure we want to be Polar Bears?" |
| J.R. Jarosh says, "This year will put to rest any thoughts that the
Jacksonport Polar Bears have it easy..." |
