May 13, 2003
by Marcia Hoebreckx

June 6 - 8 will find the Midsummer's ensemble playing concerts featuring the music of Doppler, Rheinberger, Mozart, and Fauré at the Unitarian Fellowship in Sister Bay, Shepherd of the Bay Church in Ellison Bay, and The Clearing.

A third program featuring music of Gershwin, Haugland, and Thieriot will be performed June 12 at the Peninsula Art School, and June 13th and 14th at the Hardy Gallery in Ephraim as a part of Fyr Bal festivities. A free Concert for Children on the 14 at 11 AM in the Ephraim Village Hall will also be part of Fyr Bal.

Midsummer's signature home concerts will take place in four charming Door County residences, starting with the Hellmich's home in Carlsville on June 10. This will be a repeat of the T. Ashwell program. A program featuring music of Berwald, Foerster, and Dohnanyi will be presented at the Vittum residence on Cottage Row in Fish Creek on June 17,
Silver Poplar Studios (Maronek residence) in Ellison Bay on June 19, and Cedar Ponds (Barrett/Nevalainen residence) in Baileys Harbor on June 24. The public is encouraged to experience a concert in the intimacy of one of these inviting homes in the kind of setting for which chamber music was meant.

In addition to the above performances, Midsummer's Music Festival will present a concert for residence-bound seniors at Scandia Village and an open rehearsal for students of the Peninsula Music Festival Youth String Program and Southern Door High School Band members on June 19th.

The gala benefit evening on June 26 will celebrate the Door County Land Trust conservation easement on the Standish property on Bay Shore Drive near Carlsville. Midsummer's Music will perform music from different programs from it concert series. The event starts at 6:30 in the 100 year-old Standish home and followed by refreshments by the dock. The Land Trust and Midsummer's Music are joining forces in this celebration, which will benefit both organizations.

The Midsummer's Music ensemble includes some of the finest professional musicians in the Midwest, including members of the Lyric Opera Orchestra in Chicago, and artist faculty from universities in Illinois and Wisconsin. David Perry is the first violinist in the Pro Arte Quartet in-residence at the University of Wisconsin, Jim and Jean Berkenstock are principal players at Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Isabella Lippi is the Concertmaster of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. In all, 12 musicians will be performing in this year's festival ensemble that includes winds, strings, and piano.

For detailed information on all of the concerts vist the
Midsummer's Music Web site, or to make reservations, call 920.854.7088. Since many venues sell out, reservations are advised.

Midsummer's Music Festival kicked off its 13th season in Door County on June 5 with a benefit concert and dinner at T. Ashwell's Restaurant in Ellison Bay. This event marked the first of 15 concerts in Door County during the month of June; the month will conclude with a joint benefit concert with the Door County Land Trust at the Standish residence on Bay Shore Drive on June 26.

The evening at T. Ashwell's began with hors d'oeuvres in the Gazebo, followed by the concert at 7 PM, which featured the music of Moscheles, Glinka, and Dohnanyi, and concluded with dinner in the restaurant. David Perry, violin, and Jean Berkenstock, flute, were featured in the Moscheles, and Mel Warner, clarinet, James Berkenstock, bassoon, and William Billingham, piano, performed in the Glinka composition. Their string quartet and Mr. Billingham performed the Dohnanyi.
