Cheryl Wheeler

STURGEON BAY, WI - International star Cheryl Wheeler is a songwriter who must work hard at her craft. Her songs are rarely spontaneously inspired and jotted down. Nonetheless, she takes you on a musical acoustic walk with her characters, their viewpoints, chance meetings and her experiences from the road. She creates an Americana-mix of songs and events - a café visit, a storm, a chance encounter, a seasonal change.Wheeler's songs are carried to your ears and heart on a beautifully emotional voice and clear melodic guitar, often backed with piano or strings.

Classified as a folk singer, with a touch of country, some occasional fine contemporary orchestrations and arrangements, Wheeler is hardly locked into one genre. Self-classified as a communicator of the heart, Wheeler has the ability to speak of the good, the bad, the ups and downs, as well as the humorous. Many artists have covered Wheeler's songs, including Holly Near, Garth Brooks, Christine Lavin, Bette Midler, Peter, Paul and Mary, and Juice Newton.

A childhood tomboy Wheeler grew up in Timonium, Maryland. In 1976 she moved to New England.

"I planned to visit only a few weeks," says Wheeler, "But I stayed. It's rural, kind of out in the woods."

Since she is on the road most of the time it's good to go home to the rugged landscape of the rocky north Atlantic coast for regrouping and rejuvenation. Going home also means rekindling her bonds with three cats and three dogs. James, her border collie is the inspiration behind "Howl at the Moon."

Writing songs about life's simpleness as well as national events like the Columbine shootings, Wheeler embraces the realm of storyteller, soul searcher, comic, philosopher and musician. She'll take you on a roller coaster but her warmth will keep you riveted with both the lyrics of her original works and her clear, soothing voice.

Tickets are $18 and are available at the Third Avenue Playhouse, 239 Third Avenue, or by calling (920) 743-1760.
