Jazz giant Janet Planet at TAP with guitarist Tom Theabo
October 03, 2003
by Steve Kastner

STURGEON BAY, WI - I first heard Janet Planet in the early 70's playing at an obscure Jazz club in Fish Creek. She had an unusual name, an amazing voice and blazing determination to become a diva. Her recordings began to appear in the 80s with several CDs earning national acclaim, including "The Consequence of Two" with guitarist and long-time collaborator Tom Theabo, "Frank's Place" with Big Band Reunion, and "More Beautiful Than Planned" with pianist and composer John Harmon.

Janet's voice is nothing short of incredible, gaining in depth while losing nothing of its extended high register, polished over the years of her professional career as a vocalist.

She can slip unobtrusively in and out of "head" voice, while her vibrato spins effortlessly at any volume level, with no hint of unsteadiness.

Jazziz Magazine accurately hails Janet Planet as a "voice of the New Jazz Culture," exclaiming her, "...amazingly powerful voice with seemingly limitless expression."

Janet is simply unimpeded by technical limitations, a cultured gift that permits her to achieve things beyond the ability of other singers.
She can play extravagantly with note values, while always remaining in control, capable of pulling things back to center at will. Janet also possesses an unfaltering sense of swing coupled with an instrumentalist's imagination. She can weave ballads with the greatest simplicity, letting the words speak clearly and persuasively.

"Janet Planet can sing sweet and pretty but she can also come on strong with a big voice that never wavers out of control," says
Cadence Magazine.

She works with numerous bands and individuals often backed by guitarist Tom Theabo.

For over 35 years Theabo has been playing and recording with musicians like Grammy nominee Chris Swansen and renowned pianist/composer John Harmon. Tom has developed a unique orchestral chording style, a trademark feature of his arrangements that has earned him critical acclaim.

Working as Planet's musical director for over twenty years, the two performers have perfected a unique and complimentary style and sound. Janet Planet will be performing with Tom Theabo at the
Third Avenue Playhouse on Saturday, October 11 at 7:30 PM. Ticket are $12, $10 and $7, with reservations availabe at 920.743.1760.
