Dr. Alison Attar adds harp to Midsummer's mix
June 10, 2005

Harpist Dr. Alison Attar will join Midsummer's Music as the featured guest artist for four concerts June 16 through June 21. Many area residents know Alison because she has vacationed here with her family so frequently in the past. Robert and Susan Kinde are now permanent residents of Baileys Harbor.

Alison's career has taken her across the country to appear as soloist with many musically diverse groups, and to countries like Canada and Scotland as well. She currently resides in the Chicago area where she appears frequently with Music of the Baroque, His Majestie's Clerkes, the Newberry Consort, and Chicago Opera Theater.

She will appear with Midsummer's Music at the Peninsula Art School on Thursday, June 16, with additional concerts at The Hardy Center for the Arts on June 17 and 18, during Fyr Bal Weekend, and at Fine Line Designs Gallery on the June 21. All concerts start at 7:30 PM except for the Hardy concert on the June 18, which begins at 7 PM.

In the first of two works on the program, flutist Jean Berkenstock, oboist Judi Lewis, and the string quartet will join Ms. Attar. The work entitled "Concerto" is a septet that pits the three solo instruments against the strings.

"It is a stunningly beautiful work that exploits the sumptuous beauty of the three solo instruments in a most engaging way," says Jim Berkenstock, Artistic Director of Midsummer's Music. "Alison's harp playing brings such a voluptuous quality to the work, aided by the mesmerizing sounds of the flute and oboe."

The program also presents Suite en Parties by the French composer Vincent d"Indy for harp, flute and strings. The program concludes with the Serenade in D by Johannes Brahms, in a version for ten winds and strings, as a part of Midsummer's festival-long tribute to Brahms.

Those attending the June 16 performance will get the benefit of additional program discussion provided by Lori Skelton, program annotator and on-air announcer for Wisconsin Public Radio, who will be acting as host for the evening. This is the first of two such concerts that will be introduced by Ms. Skelton. She will return on July 2nd for the final festival concert at the Peninsula Art School when Ms. Attar will once again be featured.
